THE POWER OF FAITH & PASSION

Those of us who bow hunt understand the challenges that it presents, but the extra challenge is what we truly appreciate. Very few bow hunts can present more difficulty then matching wits with a  Spring Gobbler.

Hunter Jacobs age 22 and native of Moneta Virginia had an amazing 2016 Spring Gobbler Season, having tagged out with 3 birds using his Mathew Halon bow. Hunter was introduced to the outdoors and hunting early on by his father and pa-pa, but never caught the "bow bug" until he attended High School at Liberty Christian Academy. There he met some friends that were into archery, specifically target archery.

It wasn't long before Jacobs had purchased his first bow and was soon hooked. Initially he participated in 3D shoots, but because of his passion for hunting he quickly transitioned into bow hunting. Hunter says " I always enjoyed the outdoors, but more importantly it gives me a chance to focus on my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Hunter is set to graduate from Liberty University on May 14,2016 with a bachelors degree in Marketing, and maybe he should give Mathews Bows a call as he has demonstrated his marketing ability very well for them this spring!

His Spring Gobbler season of a lifetime began on opening morning Saturday 4/9/16 and those of you, including myself can recall the inclement spring conditions we were met with, but that didn't deter Hunter from setting up just off a field he had been seeing Toms use as their strutting zone. As 7a.m. approached he hadn't heard a peep when a lone hen showed up and soon several more hens followed. Not long afterward a nice Gobbler showed up and noticed the decoys that Jacobs had set up. The big bird came right in and circled the Jake decoy presenting a perfect broadside shot. Hunter let his arrow fly and it found it's mark. His first bow Gobbler scored 63.5, weighing 20.5lbs with a 10 1/4" beard and 1 1/8" spurs.

The following Monday he joined up with Brandon Reyes a good friend and avid bowhunter who has several turkey/bow kills under his belt, for a Bedford County Spring Gobbler hunt. This time Hunter helped call in a nice bird and also gathered video on his phone while Brandon harvested a big Gobbler with his bow(this video can be seen on SCWT FB page April 2016).

As Hunters Spring Season continued he had several close calls with birds that just wouldn't come within bow range so he decided to go back to the spot where he and Brandon had had success. This time Jacobs had to carry the blind, decoys, chair and his bow to the same spot and set up. Before he had even completed his set-up a Gobbler sounded off and the adrenaline started flowing!

Not long after first light arrived so did a few hens and a strutting Tom. The hens began working away from his set-up, but the big bird just couldn't resist the decoys and his dominant instinct and was soon within the danger zone of Jacobs bow and again the arrow found it's mark on his second Virginia Spring Gobbler. This bird score 64.19 with a 11 1/4" beard.

As if his season could get any better, Jacobs third and final bird and hunt were a bit more unique than his first two. On this morning Jacobs found himself sitting in his rural Bedford County home typing a college paper when he noticed a bearded hen that had been frequenting the property feeding close by in a field.

Jacobs decided he would grab his bow and some camo and put on a stalk hunt for this bird. He crept out his front door and around the side of the house. He was able to close to within 45 yards and felt comfortable at this distance due to years of consistent practice. He raised his bow behind the cover of a big oak tree and stepped out and let his black eagle arrow fly. Once again, as in the two previous hunts the arrow found it's mark.

Jacobs says "It goes to show you that when you follow Jesus Christ and leave every scenario up to him whether in life or even hunting, he will bless those who follow him".

Hunter mentioned several times to me that he was honored to have me do this article and I simply told him that it was me that is honored to share his amazing story of Faith and Passion with our hunting community!
