THE DREADLOCK BUCK

Scotty Dolan has been hunting for 40 years from the hills of Greenbrier County West Virginia where he was raised to the flatlands of Goochland County Virginia where he now resides, but nothing could prepare him for the buck he would shoot November 16, 2013.

Scotty is part of "The Hard Times Hunt Club" in Goochland and on that mid November morning the 20 member club was using dogs to push the bush on a 400 acre plot of land. At 12:30pm the members met up for lunch to share the morning hunt stories and to get a plan together for the afternoon hunt.

After about an hour Scotty decided to venture off in a different direction on the property from where the rest of the group and dogs were headed. He got into a treestand in an area that he felt good about, after all it was mid November in Virginia, the bucks should be on the prowl. An hour had passed without any action so he moved to another stand not far away that overlooked a cutover area.

The conditions were ideal Scotty recalls, the winds were calm and there were no dogs running. It was about 4:30 when he noticed a deer working toward him along the edge of the cutover. As the deer moved to within 60 yards he could tell there was something very different about this deer.

Even though this hunter has seen plenty of deer over the last 40 years he had never layed eyes on a buck like this. The buck continued to close the distance, unaware of Scotty who was preparing to take the first good shot he could get once the buck was within 40 yards. A short time later the crazy horned buck stopped, raised it's head and presented the hunter a straight on shot, which he took with his shotgun dropping the buck in it's tracks.

Scotty's curiosity got the best of him and he quickly climbed down from the stand and headed toward this bizarre buck. When he got to where the buck layed he looked down and said "that's the damnedist thing I have ever seen".  Although Scotty has killed some fine bucks in the past this buck finds itself in an entirely different category.

He was so excited about what had taken place he couldn't push the numbers on his phone to call the guys to tell them what he had killed. Scotty is known as a joker within the hunt club so when the other members received his picture of his harvest they immediately thought he got the pic off the internet. Once help showed up a short while later they were all shocked at what they saw and the congratulations began.

With the advancements in technology over the years we have all seen and heard some crazy hunting stories and pictures, some real and some made up. I can tell you first hand that Scotty Dolan's buck is the real deal even though it looks unreal.

I believe a drop tine buck is high on most deer hunter's list of achievements, but Scotty's buck is the true epitomy of that. There are lot's of theories to explain why a buck will develop droptines and much of this information suggests that an injury to the deer prior to their next set of antlers developing is to blame. I would like to see what theories there are to support Scotty's buck, Im not sure it's possible.

On a side note this buck was missing it's testicles and it couldn't be determined if the buck was born that way or lost them along the way? Maybe that is the reason for it's unique headgear?

That's the beauty of deer hunting, some things just can't be explained and you never know what to expect with each hunt!

Scotty's buck has 20 scoreable points and weighed about 175lbs. No members of the hunt club had seen this buck and they had no trail cam pictures of him. The buck has not been officially scored yet so stay tuned into Star City Whitetails website and we will report the certified score as well as the pictures of the mount.
