The early harvest statistics for Virginia's Youth weekeknd are promising. Despite the continuous rain many kids got out and participated in our first ever Saturday and Sunday Youth hunt.
Star City Whitetails received twice the number of pictures as we did last season for this Youth hunt and I was fortunate enough to be involved in the QDMA Roanoke Branch sponsored Youth Hunt that happened in Botetourt County 9/26/15 Saturday. On this hunt there were 4 kids that were selected through an application process and none had ever harvested a deer. Three of the four kids ended up harvesting that evening which included a doe, spike and coyote.
To witness the excitement and see the joy on the faces of these children was very rewarding and it took me directly back to my first harvest alongside my gradfather years ago. Of the many pictures we received there was one young lady named Karle Cundiff who was fortunate enough to take a great Virginia buck.
The Smile Says It All....
They say "patience is a virtue" and although Karle is only 14 she exercised patience on her family farm in the Glade Hill area of Franklin County during this Youth weekend. Karle passed 28 different deer over the 2 days including several decent 8 pointers while hunting from a box blind accompanied by her uncle Randall Cundiff. The 2 were hunting over a bean field which the deer frequent and the deer were piling in to feed. Knowing that there were some bigger bucks on the farm they decided to hold out and see what happened. Karle's Sunday Blessing came true at last light when this mature buck with G2's & G3's measuring 11" stepped into the field and Karle made good with her 7mm08 rifle.
I enjoyed speaking to Karle's father Carl Cundiff to gather this information on the hunt and he told me that although Karle loves deer hunting her first love is softball. As attention started coming in about her Big Buck kill her father asked Karle "what's better-hitting a homerun in softball or killing a big buck"?. She sat there for a moment then responded "hitting a homerun in front of a crowd takes the cake"!
This isn't Karle's first harvest, she has actually taken four other deer over the past few years including a 6 and 8 pointer(pictured below) from Youth Day in 2013. It's kids like Karle and the others that participated in this 2 day hunt that help keep our deer hunting tradition alive and well and for that we should all be grateful!
