Cody Guess is just 22 years old, but he is an old soul when it comes to the outdoors. Cody was introduced to hunting early on by his mother Tammy Guess who would take him along on deer hunts at the age of 3. By the age of 5 Cody had successfully taken both a deer and turkey and has never looked back.
I have had the pleasure of interviewing many hunters on their success stories since the inception of this website and lived out their hunts as if I was alongside them. Cody's hunt was no exception, his passion jumped right through the phone as we talked. Cody tells me that hunting and fishing are a 365 day per year pursuit for him. Quoting this hunter he says "As long as it's edible and legal he is always chasing something."
On the morning of April 21, 2015 Cody sat out on his family farm in Lyon Kentucky in search of a Spring Gobbler. He decided to hike to a spot on the farm where he had had prior success. Upon arrival at his spot he decided to set up at the bottom of a big tree and he began sofltly calling with his "Dead End" diaphragm mouth call. Within moments his call was answered by a gobbler on roost. Not long after the initial interaction the bird was on the ground making it's way toward the hunter. Cody told me that this was the quickest, simplest and most realistic hunt that he had ever been on.
The gobbler, as if on a string came directly to within 8 yards of where Cody was set up and from there he let his 12 gauge Stoger M2000 shotgun do the talking. As Cody approached his harvested bird he had no idea of what he had just accomplished and it wasn't till he arrived back at the farmhouse and compared his gobbler to a bird that his father had shot the same morning that he noticed that his wild turkey was significantly heavier. A short time later he took the gobbler to a local shooter's supply store to have it weighed. With a set of hand scales they determined that the bird weighed around 37lbs.
With a little research they found that Cody's turkey may be a new record. Cody contacted the NWTF and several representatives investigated the bird as well as officially weighing it on certified scales. Indeed it was determined that Cody Guess had taken the new world record with a weight of 37.6 lbs outweighing the old record holding turkey taken by an Oregon hunter over a decade ago which weighed 37.1 lbs.
This young man has received a ton of attention since his world record harvest, but he was more than happy to take my call and allow me to conduct an interview with him in order to share it with our hunting community.
I'm sure curious minds will wonder why this turkey weighed over 20lbs more than your average 17lb wild turkey?
Cody is just as curious as we are and was quick to point out that his farm does have some food plots, but that there are no auto feeders or supplementary feeding going on. He also told me that over the years there have been other heavy birds killed on and around the property. His sister took a 28lb bird and an adjoining property owner harvested a 30lb bird. I assume that just like deer the "turkey genetics" play a role in this unique harvest.
Cody made it very clear to me that he gives all the credit to the man above the Lord Jesus Christ. This hunters faith, patience and dedication have led him to a true turkey blessing!
Congratulations Cody!!
