It's exciting to see young folks continue to take up our great sport of hunting!

The significance of getting our youth involved in hunting can't be taken lightly, ultimately our traditions longevity depends on it.

There isn't a finer example of this than Chesapeake Virginia native Lee Brown. At age 44 he has been hunting and enjoying the Virginia outdoors sice he was a teenager, and as of late he has gotten his son Luke involved in all aspects of hunting.

Luke Brown is only 8 years old, but he has already managed to harvest 7 deer, a bear, a rabbit, and in the  spring of 2017 he took his first gobbler.

Another interesting aspect of Luke's hunts is that each of his harvests, including his first doe when he was 6 only required a single shot. He is yet to miss, which his father attributes to starting Luke off at age 4 using a pellet gun to shoot targets in the back yard. Keep that in mind parents, it doesn't take a gun range membership or the purchase of expensive ammunition in order to start a young person out on the right foot.

When I Iook back in time to my first deer harvest at age 12 in 1979 I can recall the hunt as if it were yesterday, and although I was twice the age of Luke when his first harvest came, we both walked the same path. We each had significant others who took the time and love to help develop our passion.

In our everchanging world of technology and need for instant gratification it's apparent to me that it's our duty to continue to get our kids outdoors, whether it's in the woods or on the water. As most of you reading this know, hunting provides much more than just a chance of harvesting, it provides discipline and patience and a code of ethics that cant be learned on the computer or cell phone. A good dose of natural medicine that only mother nature and the good Lord can provide goes a long ways, especially these days!

Consider this, Lee and Luke will recall and discuss these hunts together the rest of their lives and the memories are forever stamped in time, just seeing Luke's smile in these pictures tells us all we need to know!

I congratulate Luke for his early successes, young man I hope your passion for our great tradition only continues to grow along with you.

Lee,  I congratulate you as well, you are handing Luke the keys to a priceless and life changing sport that will only make him a more well rounded individual.

Enjoy the great photo's that capture these special moments, and folks make sure you do your part in sharing our love for the outdoors with a young person!
