The Sadler brothers of NASCAR help put Greensville County Virginia on the map, but Brent Boney is definitely stealing some of the thunder this year with a monster buck that he harvested recently. This big Virginia buck has it all, including a great tale.
This story begins in early January 2016, which was the final week of the 2015 deer hunting season. Brent is part of the 15 member Round Hill Hunting Club and they have around 20 Walker hounds that they use to promote deer movement.
On this late season hunt Brent had positioned himself in a fairly thick area on the hunt clubs 600 acre lease and waited anxiously for the sound of the hounds to hopefully push something his way. Before long he heard the dogs chasing and through the woods ahead of them came the biggest buck Brent had ever laid eyes on. He raised his Remington 870 magnum wingmaster shotgun and let fly a shell full of 00 buckshot. The big buck bounded off and Brent quickly went to the spot hoping to find blood. Long story short it ended up being a clean miss after hours of searching.
When he reported the event back to the other hunt club members they were all a little skeptical on how big Brent's description of the buck was. There had been no reports of a monster buck in the area, nor did any of the clubs trail camera's hold pictures of the buck Brent described.
Brent told me that he was absolutely sick for months after missing the big non-typical buck, but this Emporia Virginia native turned his disappointment into a mission, and in February of 2016 he went back to the same spot of the encounter and used a machete to clear some decent shooting lanes in hopes of a rematch with this heavyweight.
Fortunately his hunt club is not an overzealous bunch and collectively they decided to wait for the 2016 rifle season to begin before hunting the property, thus giving all involved the best chance at harvesting the big buck if he were still in the area.
Opening day found Brent back in his spot and although there was no deer movement he noticed many big trees that had been torn apart with rubs.
The next organized club hunt happened on Wednesday 11/23/16 the day before Thanksgiving. As is tradition the club members chose marked pennies out of a hat to determine their choice of stands. The club usually does two drives, a morning drive on one part of the property and a second drive after lunch on another piece.
The morning drive turned up no harvests, so after lunch they again drew pennies and Brent got the penny marked #1 and without hesitation he picked his special spot. As he walked toward where he had missed the giant he hoped desperately for just one more encounter.
Once the hunters were in place the dogs were released into the hunt. Brent sat patiently for a good while, but no action came his way. It was getting close to 2 pm and he was getting ready to get up and move when his daughter McKaley who is also an accomplished hunter and was serving as a dog driver that afternoon, sent her father a text telling him to stay put because she had just picked up 4 of the dogs that had ran astray and she was going to release them close to where he was.
It wasn't long before Brent heard the dogs chasing at a distance then he heard that certain sound in the leaves that deer hunters love to hear. As if out of a dream the giant Greensville Ghost appeared and was heading directly toward him. The buck fortunately crossed into one of the shooting lanes that Brent had cut earlier in the year.
Brent quickly raised his Remington shotgun, steadied himself and pulled the trigger. The big buck fell to the forest floor.
Brent said " I wasn't nervous when I fired the shot, but I couldn't control myself once I walked over to the buck."
Once the reality sat in on what had just happened he immediately called McKaley with tears of joy running down his face. She came as quick as possible and they shared a special moment that will last forever.
As Brent was leaving the property with this great buck on the dog box of his truck the adjoining landowner stopped him and asked if he could just put his hands on the buck. This property owner also had the only trail camers pictures of this deer. The buck's only appearance was on July 19, 2016(pics below).
This is truly a great Virginia Whitetail and it's bucks like Brent's that are quickly establishing Virginia as a relevant big buck state!
The buck was officially scored at 210 6/8 B&C Non-typical and determined to be 6.5 years old. He is a mainframe 10 with at least 26 scorable points.
**Brent's buck took "Best in Show" honors as Top Buck in the Dixie Deer Classic held in North Carolina in March 2017. There were over 500 deer in the competition form NC & VA and his was best. That really puts into perspective just how big this VA buck truly is**
* Brent also won first place at the 2017 Virginia Deer Classic in Richmond Virginia in August for the General Firearms 12 or more points- Non-Typical category scoring 218 4/8 gross and 210 6/8 Net. Although many great Va bucks were entered, no deer scored above 200 other than Brents Greensville Ghost*
* Brent won the Eastern division at the 2017 VA State show and took second overall with a VA SCORE of 245 6/16 *
This great Va buck will be talked about for a long, long time!
Congratulations Brent is was a joy to relive the hunt with you!
